Wake up!
These words in today’s reading from the Book of Revelation invite us to open our eyes, our minds, our hearts and encounter the living God. During this season of Advent we are invited each day to wake up a little more.
Wake up! reminds me of one of my favorite Advent hymns, “Sleepers, wake!” (Hymnal 61/62)
“Sleepers, wake!” A voice astounds us, the shout of rampart guards surrounds us: “Awake, Jerusalem, arise!” Midnight’s peace their cry has broken, their urgent summons clearly spoken: “The time has come, O maidens wise! Rise up and give us light; the Bride- groom is in sight. Alleluia! Your lamps prepare and hasten there, that you the wedding feast may share.”
It is easy for us to sleep through this season and not use it as a time to be more awake, more attentive not only to each other, but most especially to our relationship with the one whose birth we await.
These few days left before we celebrate the birth of our Lord, may we become more and more awake, more and more aware of the great Love once again entering our world. May we Wake up! and be prepared to receive that love. May we Wake up! and work to spread that love in this world that so desperately needs the love of God in Christ.
Holy God, thank you for always inviting us to wake up and pay attention to our relationship with you and with each other. Amen.
¡Despierta!
Estas palabras de la lectura de hoy del Libro del Apocalipsis nos invitan a abrir nuestros ojos, nuestra mente, nuestro corazón y nos invitan a encontrar a Dios vivo. Durante esta temporada de Adviento estamos invitados cada día a despertar un poco más.
¡Despierta! Me recuerda uno de mis himnos favoritos de Adviento: “¡Durmientes, despertad!”. (Himnario 61/62) “¡Durmientes, despertad!” Una voz nos asombra, el grito de los guardias de la muralla nos envuelve: “¡Despierta, Jerusalén, levántate!” Su llanto ha perturbado la paz de la medianoche, su urgente llamado ha sido claramente pronunciado: “¡Ha llegado el momento, oh doncellas sabias! Levántate y danos luz; el novio está a la vista. ¡Aleluya! Preparad vuestras lámparas y apresuraos allí, para que participéis del banquete de bodas. ‘
Es fácil para nosotros dormir durante esta temporada y no usarla como un tiempo para estar más despiertos, más atentos no sólo de unos y otros, sino muy especialmente de nuestra relación con aquel cuyo nacimiento esperamos.
Que estos pocos días que quedan antes de celebrar el nacimiento de nuestro Señor, podamos estar cada vez más despiertos, más y más conscientes del gran amor que una vez más entra en nuestro mundo. ¡Que Despiertes! y prepárate para recibir ese amor. ¡Que Despiertes! y trabajes para difundir ese amor en este mundo que tan desesperadamente necesita del amor de Dios en Cristo.
Santo Dios, gracias por invitarnos siempre a despertar y prestar atención a nuestra relación contigo y con los demás.
