Belonging is seen in shades
But when it comes to Black people, belonging fades
It starts off strong, then morphs into all gone
We speak, we hug and even nudge
Where’s the love?
21st century drama, 21st century strife
Where can belonging belong when yal keep coming with the knife?
We need a radical hospitality that doesn’t mask mutuality
We can all get along if you would please ignore my outer uniform
I can’t help it and neither can you
Born of Teflon but I am not all wrong
I’d rather get along in the belonging of my soul
But, I fear, I can’t trust you
Harm, Harm, Harm has sounded the alarm
Sincerity can be charming
One day a friendly smile
The next day I don’t even see you
Belonging starts with a longing to get it right
Belonging starts with getting over self-doubt
Belonging starts with removing self-hate by the colonizers grate
Belonging is the rainbow in a tribe called humanity
Belonging is not politics or any isms that divide
Belonging is a handkerchief when my heart and tears collide
