“Without my usual routines, the pandemic lockdown focused me toward the almost daily practice required for improvement in any skill — watercolor painting for me. Posting my work on a family text chain and my church email thread held me accountable and kept me going. Then the idea formed of painting some of the moments of this challenging time to commemorate the year. ‘Susan and Penny’ captures one of them.
“We wore our masks but it still felt risky riding in a car together for a summer outing up the Island. No mask for Penny, only normal attire of leash. Susan didn’t know I was snapping pictures of her and Penny walking ahead of me, so this painting was a complete surprise as a Christmas present.”
