It’s 28 degrees, and there’s a man
standing in the middle
of the Starbucks’ parking lot.
He’s just standing there.
I was ready to give him
a few dollars to buy
a coffee or a breakfast sandwich
had he approached me
or spoken to me.
He did neither as I walked
right past him to my car.
I said nothing and drove off.
Why should he have
to initiate contact
for me to do something?
For crying out loud,
it’s 28 degrees and
he was just standing there,
alone, in a parking lot
on Thanksgiving morning,
and I did nothing.
