Isaiah 3:8-15 1 Thessalonians 4:1-12 Luke 20:41-21:4

In the past two years, we have been bombarded with messages and instructions to help protect ourselves from Covid. The advice came from professionals standing at podiums, experts on zoom, and random strangers on social media. Prompting everyone to make concerted efforts to enact realities that require showing up for ourselves and our health every day. Admittedly, showing up for yourself is an ambiguous term. What does that mean?

Today we look to 1 Thessalonians 4:1-12 to better explain how we are to show up for ourselves beyond the vaccines, boosters, and boosters for those boosters. For context, consider that Paul is responding to the persecution that Thessalonians were experiencing. He sought to inform them of the best way to conduct themselves in light of their struggles. Of the many pieces of advice he gives, he emphasizes, “You should mind your business” this advice is necessary. A loving community cannot exist without individuals who can sustain themselves. I do not mean that you ignore the problems of your community, quite the opposite! Instead, by tending to your own needs and business, you can confidently be present for others knowing that you have taken care of your responsibilities.

Oh lord, we promise to champion the good news of your glory individually and as a community. Amen.
