“Amid the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic came the surprise of an invitation to attend an artist residency at Ghost Ranch in New Mexico in October 2020 — a delight and so very unexpected. Rustic accommodations aside, the gift of time and space for a full four weeks was an inspiration in and of itself.

“I found myself requiring little sleep up late painting in my adobe casita studio and up early beginning the day with morning light coming up over the mesa. Lots of energy and wandering, trying to clarify my artistic vision in a new and different landscape and as a temporary resident rather than a short-term tourist.

“Long morning walks in the desert landscape gave me a growing familiarity with the terrain, the colors of earth and sky, the texture of the earth, and the feeling of the air — all so different from my Texas environs. From this season of slowness and this sustained and regular practice of walking, a new landscape — a new possibility — in the form of Morning Magic, Matrimonial Trail emerged.”
