So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by our letter.
Advent is a joyous time for me. Tradition fills the air— wreaths, candles, holiday programs, and gatherings. Then there’s all the preparations that seem to follow that add one more layer of busyness to life. There never seems to be enough time to “do all the things,” and the joy of tradition can be overwhelmed by the urgency of “must-do.”
Our Advent calendar is made of cloth: stuffed camels, palm trees, stars, sheep, shepherds, cows—everyone is there. It is old and frayed; and I love it. When I look at it, I’m reminded that this season is about gathering and hope. All of creation—stars, animals, people—is called to draw near to the divine; to witness God’s reconciling work among us. The simple act of placing each item on the calendar centers me; reminding me who and whose we are: beloved children of God and witnesses to God’s redeeming power.
Do not let the season distract or overwhelm you. Instead, enter with curiosity and wonder. Let tradition draw you closer to God; receive the comfort and hope that comes from preparing for the incarnation of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Loving God, thank you for traditions that draw us close to you. Fill us with wonder and hope as we seek your presence. Amen.

Por lo tanto, hermanos y hermanas, manténganse f irmes y aférrense a las tradiciones que les enseñamos, ya sea de palabra o por carta.
El Adviento es una época alegre para mí. La tradición llena el aire: coronas, velas, programas festivos y reuniones. Luego, están todos los preparativos que parecen acompañar a todo ello y que añaden una capa más de ajetreo a la vida. Nunca parece haber tiempo suficiente para «hacerlo todo», y la alegría de la tradición puede verse abrumada por la urgencia de «lo que hay que hacer».
Nuestro calendario de Adviento está hecho de tela: camellos de peluche, palmeras, estrellas, ovejas, pastores, vacas… todos están ahí. Es viejo y está desgastado, y me encanta. Cuando lo veo, me recuerda que esta temporada se trata de reunirse y tener esperanza. Toda la creación —estrellas, animales, personas— está llamada a acercarse a lo divino, a ser testigo de la obra reconciliadora de Dios entre nosotros. El simple acto de colocar cada elemento en el calendario me centra, me recuerda quiénes somos y de quién somos: hijos amados de Dios y testigos del poder redentor de Dios.
No dejen que la temporada los distraiga o los abrume. En cambio, entren en ella con curiosidad y asombro. Dejen que la tradición los acerque más a Dios; reciban el consuelo y la esperanza que provienen de prepararse para la encarnación de nuestro Señor y Salvador, Jesucristo.
Dios amoroso, gracias por las tradiciones que nos acercan a ti. Llénanos de asombro y esperanza mientras buscamos tu presencia. Amén.
