Psalm 30, 32 • 42, 43
Haggai 2:1-19 ❖ Rev. 3:1-6 ❖ Matthew 24:1-14
On January 30, 1956, a bomb exploded on the front porch of the then home of Martin Luther King, Jr. and his family. Three days earlier, Dr. King spent a restless night in prayer after receiving yet another death threat. Around midnight, Dr. King prayed, “Lord, I’m down here trying to do what’s right… But I must confess that I’m faltering… losing my courage…afraid…have nothing left and I can’t face it alone.” Dr. King heard Jesus reply, “Martin Luther, stand up for righteousness. Stand up for justice. Stand up for truth. And lo, I will be with you. Even until the end of the world.”
Dr. King’s words and Psalm 30 capture my thoughts. Psalm 30 speaks of joy and sorrow and affirms
that joy is grounded in the inexhaustible and everpresent love of God. Joy is real, because the God
one encounters in the morning is the same God who accompanies through the night. Joy is possible because God remains God.
Advent is a time of active waiting and preparing. We can actively wait and joyfully work. We can stand up for righteousness, justice, truth, and faithfully proclaim that weeping may linger for the night, but joy comes with the morning, because God is utterly trustworthy and will never leave us alone.
Loving God, whose son Jesus is our companion, in the night and in the morning, help us remember we are never alone. Amen.
El 30 de enero de 1956, una bomba explotó en el porche delantero de la que entonces era la casa de Martin Luther King, Jr. y su familia. Tres días antes, el Dr. King pasó una noche inquieta en oración tras recibir otra amenaza de muerte. Alrededor de la medianoche, el Dr. King rezó: «Señor, estoy aquí tratando de hacer lo correcto… Pero debo confesar que estoy tambaleante…perdiendo mi valor… tengo miedo… no me queda nada y no puedo enfrentarlo solo». Las palabras del Dr. King y el Salmo 30 reflejan mis pensamientos. El Salmo 30 habla de la alegría y la tristeza y afirma que la alegría se basa en el amor inagotable y siempre presente de Dios. La alegría es real, porque el Dios que nos encuentra por la mañana es el mismo Dios que nos acompaña durante la noche. La alegría es posible porque Dios sigue siendo Dios.
El Adviento es un tiempo de espera activa y de preparación. Podemos esperar activamente y trabajar con alegría. Podemos defender la rectitud, la justicia y la verdad, y proclamar fielmente que el llanto puede durar toda la noche, pero la alegría llega con la mañana, porque Dios es totalmente digno de confianza y nunca nos dejará solos.
Dios amoroso, cuyo hijo Jesús es nuestro compañero, tanto de noche como de mañana, ayúdanos a recordar que nunca estamos solos. Amén.
