Amos 1:1-5, 13-2:8 ❖ 1 Thess. 5:1-11 ❖ Luke 21:5-19
It has been a hard year. We have seen destruction, as things have been thrown down (Luke 21:6). We have heard of wars and insurrections. Jesus counsels the disciples not to be terrified by what lies ahead, but that doesn’t mean that there’s nothing to be terrified about. Yet take heart because today the Christian year begins anew. Praise God that the Christian year suffuses the calendar year, offering hope amid terror, building up amid throwing down. For God’s time is not enslaved by calendar seasons and days. Concerning the end times, St Paul told Thessalonian believers: although “the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night”, you do not live in nighttime “for that day to surprise you like a thief.” The African theologian St Augustine said of this text: “the apostle was not talking about the day which begins with sunrise and ends with sunset when he said, ‘Let us walk honorably, as in the day’ [but rather] that day is realized in those who live godly, holy and righteous lives.” The Lord’s coming is already somehow present in believers, says Augustine, so “live good lives and you will be this day yourselves.” If nighttime is all around, then be the day. How do we do so? By following Paul’s words to “encourage one another and build up each other, as indeed you are doing.”
God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Ha sido un año difícil. Hemos sido testigos de la destrucción, ya que todo se ha derrumbado (Lc 21, 6). Hemos oído hablar de guerras y revoluciones. Jesús les asconseja a los discípulos que no se dejen intimidar por lo que les espera, pero eso no significa que no haya nada que temer. Sin embargo, no se desanimen, porque hoy comienza de nuevo el año cristiano. Alabemos a Dios porque el año cristiano impregna el año civil, ofreciendo esperanza en medio del terror, edificando en medio de la destrucción. Porque el tiempo de Dios no está atado a las estaciones y los días del calendario.
En cuanto al fin de los tiempos, San Pablo dijo a los creyentes de Tesalónica: aunque «el día del Señor vendrá como un ladrón en la noche», no vivís en la noche «para que ese día os sorprenda como un ladrón». El teólogo africano San Agustín dijo sobre este texto: «El apóstol no se refería al día que comienza con la salida del sol y termina con la puesta del sol cuando dijo: “Andemos honradamente, como de día”, [sino más bien] ese día se realiza en aquellos que viven una vida piadosa, santa y justa». La venida del Señor ya está de alguna manera presente en los creyentes, dice Agustín, así que «vivan una vida buena y ustedes mismos serán ese día». Si todo está envuelto en la noche, sean ustedes el día. ¿Cómo lo hacemos? Siguiendo las palabras de Pablo: «Anímense y edifíquense unos a otros, como de hecho lo están haciendo».
Dios, danos la gracia de desechar las obras de las tinieblas y revestirnos en la armadura de la luz, por medio de Jesucristo nuestro Señor. Amén.
