As my children grow, I’ve tried to be mindful of observing Advent as time of quiet and expectant waiting, while outside our doors society seems determined to jam in as much Christmas as possible before the 25th. Honestly, I think I spend more energy trying to stave off the Christmas-before-Christmas than I do preparing for Christ’s birth.
Today’s Gospel is the same passage we will read in a few months on Palm Sunday, in the midst of a different period of waiting. But the disciples’ example of waiting in this passage, as Christ journeys to his death and resurrection, does not seek to stave off what is to come, but to prepare for it.
Perhaps Advent is our way not just of waiting quietly for Christ’s birth, but of preparing the way of the Lord. Preparing my heart (and my home) in the coming weeks for the birth of Christ can be active–it can involve work, and joy, and struggle, and mistakes, and revelations, not just pushing back against the Christmas onslaught.
As we move toward Christmas, seek to use your gifts to prepare a world that welcomes the Christ child.
The Lord needs this.
God the Father, we thank you, welcoming your Holy Spirit into homes and our hearts as we prepare the way for your Son. Amen.
A medida de que mis hijos crecen, he tratado de ser consciente de observar el Adviento como un tiempo de espera mientras que fuera de nuestras puertas la sociedad parece decidida a concentrarse en la Navidad antes del día 25. Sinceramente, creo que dedico más energía trantando de evitar la Navidad antes de Navidad que a prepararme para el nacimiento de Cristo.
El Evangelio de hoy es el mismo pasaje que leeremos dentro de unos meses, el Domingo de Ramos, en medio de un periodo de espera diferente. Pero el ejemplo de espera de los discípulos en este pasaje, mientras Cristo se encamina hacia su muerte y resurrección, no busca evitar lo que está por venir, sino prepararse para ello.
Quizás el Adviento puede ser nuestra forma no solo de esperar en silencio el nacimiento de Cristo, sino de preparar el camino del Señor. Preparar mi corazón (y mi hogar) en las próximas semanas para el nacimiento de Cristo puede ser algo activo: puede implicar trabajo, alegría, lucha, errores y revelaciones, no solo resistirse al embate de la Navidad.
A medida que nos acercamos a la Navidad, busquen usar sus dones para preparar un mundo que dé la bienvenida al niño Jesús.
El Señor lo necesita.
Dios Padre, te damos gracias y damos la bienvenida a tu Espíritu Santo a nuestros hogares y a nuestros corazones mientras preparamos el camino para tu Hijo. Amén.
