The theme of God’s judgement is woven throughout the Scripture readings in Advent. This can be unsettling as we anticipate the joy and merriment of Christmas. Yet the seemingly opposing themes of judgement and joy complement each other as we journey into the depths of Advent and what it portends for the faithful.
Truly, it is sobering to contemplate the ways that God desires our faithfulness and obedience, and the countless times we are called to account for separating ourselves from him. This call to repent during Advent is the reason some call Advent a “miniLent”. Yet Advent is more than an additional season of repentance. We desire to come into alignment with God because of the joy that flows from God’s eternal love made manifest in the Christ Child. Our anticipation is rich and complex as we meditate on the profound ways that God living amongst us as one of us will change our lives and the world. Through Christ, God transforms the world by upending forces that oppose him and creating a way to live with compassion, justice and mercy. We make our joyful preparations in Advent as the result of taking account. Humbly, we await the coming of Christ—God’s presence in the fullness of light and life.
Purify our conscience, Almighty God, that your Son Jesus Christ, at his coming, may find our hearts prepared for your love. Amen.
El tema del juicio de Dios está presente en todas las lecturas de Adviento. Esto puede resultar inquietante, ya que anticipamos la alegría y la felicidad de la Navidad. Sin embargo, los temas aparentemente opuestos del juicio y la alegría se complementan entre sí a medida que nos adentramos en las profundidades del Adviento y en lo que esto significa para los fieles.
