As an undergraduate at the Episcopal Church at Yale, we had t-shirts with big letters on the back: “Christ is coming! Look busy!”
It always made me smile. And I wore it happily–until I had too many interactions with people who felt the t-shirt made light of the Gospel.
The parable of the talents is at least partly a parable about getting caught. It’s a parable of knowing neither the day nor the hour that the master will return, and being evaluated on what we have done while he was away.
I wouldn’t phrase awaiting the return of Jesus in such a glib way today as was on that college t-shirt. But Christ is coming… and if he returns today, what will he see? Where is your talent? What are you doing with it? Are you fully invested in utilizing what you have been given on behalf of the Gospel of Jesus Christ?
Or are you stuck–are you procrastinating–waiting for some sign or some moment to get started? If you’re feeling held back–what is holding you back? Is it fear? Apathy? Lack of direction?
Advent is a season for a spiritual check-in, especially for those of us who need a deadline to get inspired and moving! If you’re feeling stuck–who can you reach out to to find a coach to restart your journey with Jesus?
Jesus, help me see through your loving eyes, so that I may better love my neighbor and myself. Amen.
Cuando era estudiante universitaria en la Iglesia Episcopal de Yale, teníamos camisetas con letras grandes en la espalda que decían: «¡Cristo viene! ¡Que te vea ocupado!».
Siempre me hacía sonreír. Y la llevaba con alegría, hasta que tuve demasiadas interacciones con personas que sentían que la camiseta se burlaba del Evangelio.
La parábola de los talentos es, al menos en parte, una parábola sobre ser descubierto. Es una parábola sobre no saber ni el día ni la hora en que el amo regresará, y ser evaluados por lo que hemos hecho mientras él estaba fuera.
Hoy en día no expresaría la espera del regreso de Jesús de una manera tan simplista como lo hacía esa camiseta universitaria. Pero Cristo viene… y si regresa hoy, ¿qué verá? ¿Dónde está tu talento? ¿Qué estás haciendo con él? ¿Estás plenamente comprometido con utilizar lo que se te ha dado en nombre del Evangelio de Jesucristo?
¿O estás estancado, procrastinando, esperando alguna señal o algún momento para empezar? Si te sientes frenado, ¿qué te está frenando? ¿Es el miedo? ¿La apatía? ¿La falta de dirección?
El Adviento es una temporada para hacer un examen espiritual, especialmente para aquellos de nosotros que necesitamos una fecha límite para inspirarnos y ponernos en marcha. Si te sientes estancado, ¿a quién puedes acudir para encontrar un mentor que te ayude a reiniciar tu camino con Jesús?
Jesús, ayúdame a ver a través de tus ojos amorosos, para que pueda amar mejor a mi prójimo y a mí mismo. Amén.
