Psalm 25 • 9, 15
Amos 7:1-9 ❖ Rev. 1:1-8 ❖ Matthew 22:23-33
Waiting is difficult. Anyone who has ever waited for anything knows how slowly the minutes, hours and days can pass while you wait. How time stretches to make us feel we cannot possibly wait even one more second. As a child, waiting for the first snowfall each winter brought the excitement of knowing there would be fort-building, snow-angels, snowball fights and the fervent hope that it would also bring the cancellation of school. The anticipation-built day by day as we wished for the snow to hurry and arrive. Past winters had taught us that the snow would come, but never as quickly as we wished. Yet each year we held onto our hope.
We are a people waiting for the Alpha and the Omega, the one who is and who was and who is to
come. Each year we pause, prepare and celebrate the beginning of our cycle of waiting. We are watchfully waiting on God’s time.
This Advent season may our perception of time slow to allow us to learn and know God’s ways, to be taught God’s paths and to wait patiently for another day, another hour and another minute.
Come, Lord Jesus, fill our impatient hearts with your light and hope. Amen.
Esperar es difícil. Cualquiera que haya esperado alguna vez por algo sabe lo lentamente que pueden pasar los minutos, las horas y los días mientras esperas. Cómo se alarga el tiempo hasta hacernos sentir que no podemos esperar ni un segundo más. De niño, esperar la primera nevada cada invierno me producía la emoción de saber que habría castillos de nieve, ángeles de nieve, peleas de bolas de nieve y la ferviente esperanza de que también trajera la cancelación de las clases. La anticipación crecía día a día mientras deseábamos que la nieve llegará pronto. Los inviernos anteriores nos habían enseñado que la nieve llegaría, pero nunca tan rápido como deseábamos. Sin embargo, cada año manteníamos la esperanza.
Somos un pueblo que espera al Alfa y al Omega, al que es, al que era y al que ha de venir. Cada año hacemos una pausa, nos preparamos y celebramos el comienzo de nuestro ciclo de espera. Esperamos atentamente el tiempo de Dios.
Que en este tiempo de Adviento nuestra percepción del tiempo se frene para permitirnos aprender y conocer los caminos de Dios, para que nos enseñe sus sendas y para esperar pacientemente otro día, otra hora y otro minuto.
Ven, Señor Jesús, llena nuestros corazones impacientes con tu luz y tu esperanza. Amén.
